At 3:10am this morning, the fire alarm in my high-rise apartment building went off. It is very loud (click audio clip below).
What you do when you hear this alarm depends on several factors: the floor you are on, if the fire is in your unit, and so on. Don’t panic, just be prepared.
Generally speaking:
If fire or smoke is NOT in your suite, it is safe to stay. Wait for instructions from your local fire department. They will tell you what to do over the speaker in your unit.
If fire or smoke IS in your suite, call 911, tell them exactly where you are, and move to the balcony. If you do not have a balcony, use wet towels to seal the cracks in your doors.
Every high-rise apartment building will have fire instructions posted. Know what they are.
