Seeking Storyteller/Interviewer for Communications Team

WHTO is possible because of the hard work, passion and dedication of our team of volunteers! Currently, we are seeking to fill the following volunteer position:
STORYTELLER AND INTERVIEWER
ABOUT THE ROLE
As part of the WHTO Storytelling Team, you will have the opportunity to collect the stories of newcomers in a positive, exciting and empowering way. You are invited to explore and understand powerful settlement experiences of newcomers and those who support their journeys, and share them with our community through the WHTO Hearts and Minds Human Library.
Responsibilities include:
- Interviewing newcomers and other stakeholders in the settlement space
- Identifying emerging stories that align with upcoming themes as per the content calendar
- Arranging and conducting these interviews by phone or in-person
- Transcribing interviews for posting on the WHTO website and social media
- Sharing your own insights from these interviews through occasional commentary/blog pieces, also to be featured on our website and social media
SKILLS AND EDUCATION
- Strong writing, interviewing, and cross-cultural communication skills
- Undergraduate education in related fields (Journalism, Writing, Communications etc.) an asset but not required
- A high degree of self-motivation and autonomy, coupled with the ability to work well with a team
- Photography skills an asset but not required (for selected audio-visual interviews)
- A positive attitude and a passion for sharing stories!
ROLE STRUCTURE
The ideal candidate is located in Toronto/GTA and is available to meet with the team in-person at the Centre for Social Innovation. The role requires 15-25 hours of consistent commitment per month, but the scheduling of the interviews is flexible depending on your availability.

Seeking Social Media Manager for Communications Team

SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER and GRAPHIC DESIGNER
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a vital member of the Communications team at WHTO, you are invited to unleash your creativity through your words, graphic design and storytelling in order to amplify the stories of newcomers in a positive, exiting and empowering way. Together with the team, you will be designing and executing a social media strategy to keep WHTO’s communications materials engaging, relevant and meaningful for our community.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing WHTO social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, website)
- Creating content and posting as scheduled according to content calendar objectives
- Summarize metrics of audience engagement and craft social media strategy accordingly
- Developing visuals using Canva or other design software
- Editing video clips to create stories for the website
SKILLS AND EDUCATION
- Working knowledge of and experience in social media management (1+ years)
- Basic design and video editing skills
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Some experience in event planning an asset
- Undergraduate education in related fields (Marketing, Communications, etc.) an asset but not required
- A high degree of autonomy and self-direction in work
- A positive attitude and a passion for sharing stories!
ROLE STRUCTURE
The ideal candidate is located in Toronto and is available to meet regularly with the team in-person at the Centre for Social Innovation. However, remote candidates will be considered if they demonstrate the required skills and commitment.
The role requires 5-7 hours of consistent commitment per week.
